Progress Novelty Casting Works New York
See photos: this is a beautiful vintage piece metal is plated & lacquered as noted on the sticker with care / cleaning instructions
Estimated to be from the 1940’s-1950’s and made by P.N.C.W. which stands for "Progress Novelty Casting Works" a little known company based for part of their existence in Long Island City, NY.
P.N.C.W. acquired this Jennings Brothers mold when they went out of business and produced it and many other novelties such as jewelry boxes, birds & animal figurines and vanity items throughout the second quarter of the 20th century. The owner P.N.C.W retired in the late 1960s.
This design was originally created in about 1910 by Jennings Brothers and marketed as a "chalice".
The metal is a type known as "spelter", a zinc rich alloy of zinc and lead and sometimes copper, with a low melting point which lends itself to casting in a mold. If you put a magnet to it, you'll find it won't stick indicating that there is no iron or steel in it.
The spelter is then coated with an anodized layer of nickel or chrome or bronze or whatever color metallic finish was desired. It looks like this one may be nickel plated and lacquered.
